This work was originally scored for 2 violas, 2 viola da gambas, cello, violone, and harpsichord. The viola da gamba parts may be played on violas or cellos. The violone part may be played on the bass. Bach’s harpsichord part (which is not included here) is a continuo line with figured bass indications. Several editions are available with the harpsichord part fully written out.
